Germany sweat on Khedira and Gomez

Germany boss Joachim Low has confirmed that both Sami Khedira and Mario Gomez could miss his side’s next match at the European Championships.

Juventus midfielder Khedira started Saturday’s quarter-final win over Italy but he was forced off after just 16 minutes. Gomez was also handed a start and he helped create the opening goal for midfielder Mesut Ozil.

However, he was unable to complete the full 90 minutes and he was also brought off before Germany eventually won on penalties.

Speaking after the win, Low admitted both could be missing his side’s semi-final clash against France or Iceland.

He told reporters: “Sami – it’s not too positive to have to bring him off after 15 minutes in such a game, he had a problem with his hamstring. I don’t know if he will heal before Thursday. “Gomez has a problem as well but I don’t know much about that.”

Germany defender Mats Hummels will definitely miss the game due to suspension and while Low expects Iceland to play well, he believes his team will play France in the final four.

He added: “France are the favourites, they are the hosts and they have a great side with individual quality. “Iceland have surprised us, they are well organised in defence. It won’t be easy for France against such enthusiastic opposition but I think if France put their quality on the pitch they will get to the semi-finals.”

“If you’re in the semi the goal is to reach the final so I think now we have to focus on recovering. A game like this affects the body, we have to make sure to recover the players and we want more.”
